Trauma Informed Practice
At Denewood Academy, we meet the emotional and social needs of our pupils through a dynamic, developmental and trauma-sensitive approach, using additional assessment and support if required.
Trauma-informed practice, in line with the Trust ‘Thinking Differently’ programme, is an approach that recognises the impact of trauma on individuals and emphasises creating a safe and supportive environment. We recognise that we evolve and grow with our approach, working with other external specialist services to offer support.
There are 6 principles of trauma-informed practice:
- Safety – The physical, psychological and emotional safety of all pupils
- Trustworthiness – Building trust through transparency, reliability, and consistent practices
- Choice – Providing children with opportunities to make informed decisions and choice about their care
- Collaboration – Working in partnership with children and families to develop and implement plans
- Empowerment – Supporting children to develop their strengths and abilities and to take control of their lives
- Cultural consideration – Recognising and respecting the diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences of individuals
The benefits of Trauma Informed Practice in adolescence
